(The Seamless Route to Crete's Northwestern Edge)

Reaching the absolute edge of Crete should feel like an escape, not a logistical puzzle. We strip away the friction of early morning port navigation and ticket queues. Our coordinated bus-to-boat transit delivers you directly to the Kissamos ferry, setting the stage for a maritime journey that perfectly contrasts the rugged, pirate history of Gramvousa Island with the absolute serenity of the Balos lagoon.

(Disclaimer: Not all the parts shown in this video are scheduled to be visited on this excursion)

Quick Experience Highlights

► Zero Driving Risk: Skip the hazardous unpaved mountain road and the exhausting cliff hike entirely.
► Pre-Booked Boat Tickets: Your Kissamos ferry tickets are included in the excursion price, saving you from morning port queues.
► Gramvousa Fortress: Hike the 137-meter steep rock trail to explore the 16th-century Venetian military remains.
► The Lagoon: Float in the shallow, tropical turquoise waters resting over sand mixed with crushed pink shells.
► Mobile Tickets Accepted: Just show your phone; no printing required!

Why Choose This Journey? (The Stress-Free Way)

  • • Two Destinations in One: Driving only gets you to Balos. The ferry route allows you to drop anchor at the legendary pirate island of Imeri Gramvousa, an isolated historical site totally inaccessible by car.

  • • Pacing & Safety: Our professional drivers navigate the morning coastal traffic, ensuring you board the Kissamos ferry on time. Operating in Crete Since 1997, our logistics are tested and flawless.
  • • On-Board Comfort: The ferries feature open sundecks, shaded lounge seating with air-conditioning, and self-service restaurants, providing a comfortable base camp between the two stops.
  • • The Ultimate Cooldown: Instead of hiking up a dusty mountain at the end of your beach day, you simply walk back onto the ferry, grab a cold drink, and sail back to the port where our bus waits.

The Experience: Maritime Legends and the Exortic Lagoon

A Day of Maritime History and Tropical Waters. Sailing out of Kissamos port, the rugged coastline of the peninsula rises sharply from the Aegean Sea. After a one-hour cruise, your first stop is the island of Imeri Gramvousa. Known historically as a pirate stronghold, a steep uphill trail leads to a 16th-century Venetian fortress resting 137 meters above the sea. The panoramic view of the colliding sea currents and the rusted shipwreck below is your reward before heading back down to the beach.

A short 15-minute sail brings you to your primary destination: the Balos lagoon. The contrast is immediate. You step off the boat into shallow, warm waters resting over white sand. You have almost three hours to swim in the lagoon's tropical environment and walk along the sandbars before the ferry returns you to Kissamos for your final drive home.

Your Day at a Glance:

1. The Morning Transit: We collect you from your area and drive directly to Kissamos port. Your Tour Leader distributes the pre-arranged boat tickets to bypass the ticket office queues.

2. Gramvousa Island (Midday): Sail to the island, hike up to the Venetian castle for photos, and cool off in the sea near the iconic shipwreck.

3. Balos Lagoon (Afternoon): Anchor at the shallow lagoon. Spend hours swimming in the warm waters before cruising back to the port around 16:30 for your return bus transfer.

Frequently Asked Questions (Gramvousa & Balos)

[+] Why is the boat better than driving to Balos?

Driving requires navigating an 8km unpaved, cliffside dirt road that invalidates the undercarriage insurance of rental cars. Furthermore, parking at the top requires a steep 2km hike down to the beach, which you must climb back up in the afternoon heat. The boat avoids all of this and includes a stop at Gramvousa island.

[+] Do I have to hike up to the Gramvousa Fortress?

No, the hike is completely optional. While the panoramic view from the 16th-century fortress is highly recommended, you are free to stay on the beach at Gramvousa, swim by the shipwreck, or simply relax on the boat while others hike.

[+] Are there sunbeds and umbrellas at Balos?

The municipality provides a limited number of sunbeds at Balos, which operate on a first-come, first-served basis. Alternatively, you can rent portable umbrellas directly from the ferry before disembarking to ensure you have shade on the sand.
