A Thrilling Expedition Through Samaria Gorge: Conquer the Legendary Path of Crete
Are you ready to take on the adventure of a lifetime? Picture yourself standing at the edge of one of Europe’s most awe-inspiring natural wonders—the Samaria Gorge. This isn't just a hike; it's an odyssey, a challenge that calls to the daring. Whether you're in Heraklion, Hersonissos, or Malia, the Samaria Gorge excursion is within reach, waiting for you to answer its call.
The Ultimate Challenge From the moment you set foot on the trail, you’ll know this isn’t your average hike. The Samaria Gorge, the longest in Europe, stretches over 18 kilometers, with towering cliffs on either side that seem to close in on you as you venture deeper into the heart of Crete. The path is rugged, demanding your full attention as you navigate rocky terrain, cross sparkling streams, and take in the breathtaking views of the White Mountains that surround you.
Why the Samaria Gorge Excursion? Because this isn’t just a walk—it’s a journey that tests your limits and rewards you with experiences that few places on Earth can offer. Imagine the sense of achievement as you conquer each twist and turn, knowing that you’re walking a path carved by ancient forces over millennia. The Samaria Gorge tour is more than just an excursion; it’s a rite of passage for those who crave adventure.
A Descent into the Wild Starting at Omalos, you’ll begin your descent into the gorge from the famous Xyloskalo, a wooden staircase that leads you down into the abyss. The air here is cool, scented with the fragrance of pine and wild herbs. As you trek through, you might catch a glimpse of the elusive kri-kri, the wild goats that call this place home. The narrow path, known as Sideroportes or “Iron Gates,” is only a few meters wide, flanked by sheer rock walls that rise 300 meters above you—this is the gorge at its most dramatic.
Reaching Agia Roumeli After hours of challenging but exhilarating trekking, the sight of Agia Roumeli at the gorge’s end is like an oasis. This remote village, nestled between the towering cliffs and the Libyan Sea, offers the perfect respite. Dive into the crystal-clear waters for a refreshing swim, or relax at a local taverna, where you can savor authentic Cretan dishes (not included in the price) while your legs recover from the hike. The Samaria Gorge excursion from Heraklion, Hersonissos, or Malia ensures that your journey ends in this slice of paradise, where the sea meets the sky.
The Journey Home But the adventure isn’t over yet. After your well-deserved rest in Agia Roumeli, a boat ride across the shimmering waters will take you to Chora Sfakion, where your bus awaits to take you back to your starting point. As you sail away, the towering cliffs of the gorge standing tall in the distance, you’ll have a moment to reflect on what you’ve just accomplished. This isn’t just a tour; it’s a story you’ll tell for years to come.
Why Wait? The Samaria Gorge excursion isn’t just a day trip; it’s a full-fledged adventure that takes you from the bustling streets of Heraklion, Hersonissos, or Malia into the untamed heart of Crete. It’s an experience that will leave you breathless, not just from the physical exertion, but from the sheer beauty and magnitude of what you’ve witnessed. So, lace up your hiking boots, pack your essentials, and get ready to conquer the Samaria Gorge.
This is your call to adventure. Will you answer it?

Southwestern Crete
Duration:
17 hours approximately - 500 km. (depending on where you get on - this estimate is from Heraklion city)
Samaria Gorge excursion Overview:
Leaving early in the morning and driving along the north coastline, we stop for a short breakfast break (optional) outside Rethymnon, before we continue to Chania and on to the Plain of Omalos 1300 meters above sea level where we begin our descent into the gorge. The 18 km walk begins with our descent from Xyloskalo (800 meters) onto the floor of the gorge.
The gorge of Samaria is one of the longest in Europe, some 18 km (12 miles) and varies from 2-40 meters in width, with a depth of 250-600 meters. It takes 6-7 hours to walk through and it is essential for you to have the correct footwear as it is rocky in some places. However, the ever-changing view and the wonderful scents of pinewood and Cretan herbs make the walk pleasant and the effort worthwhile.
Following the path next to the river bed of Taras, with its crystal sparkling water, you pass the stone huts and Osia (Santa) Maria church in the deserted village of Samaria, through fantastic rock formations which have been carved and etched by thousands of years of winter torrents, taste the fresh cold water from the springs on these rocks, and finally get into the narrow pass of Sideroportes (Iron doors) that rises to a height of 300 meters but is only a few meters wide.
This brings you to the mouth of the gorge, which is on the shores of the Libyan Sea, at the small fishing village of Aghia Roumeli. Here you can taste a meal in one of the local taverns (optional) or enjoy a refreshing swim in the blue water of the Libyan Sea (optional) . From here you are transported by boat to Chora Sfakion, where we meet our coach for the return journey through the scenic route of Imbros Gorge and the Plateau, the villages of Askifou and Vrisses.
Definitely a trip for the adventurous and fairly fit. (At the beginning and end of the season a change of socks and a jacket would be essential).
