15:30: Departure from Athinios Port (Santorini). Finally, the participants will return to the vessel where they will be able to enjoy a beautiful view of the Aegean and Cretan Sea in the open decks of the vessel.

Santorini Day Trip from Heraklion: Full Itinerary

Your day begins early. Our air-conditioned bus picks you up from your hotel or a nearby meeting point between 05:45 and 07:00, depending on your location. The bus takes you to Heraklion Port, where you check in at the Seajets kiosk with your VisitCrete.com voucher. You receive your ferry tickets, your Santorini bus number, and a multilingual information brochure.

08:00 — Departure from Heraklion Port

You board one of the Seajets fleet — the fastest commercial catamarans in the Mediterranean. The crossing to Santorini takes approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes. The vessels have comfortable airline-style seating, air conditioning, a snack bar with coffee and fresh pastries, restrooms, and open decks where you can watch the Aegean islands pass by. If you prefer extra comfort, you can upgrade to Platinum seats for a more spacious and quieter experience.

09:45 — Arrival in Santorini (Athinios Port)

As the ferry approaches Santorini, you get your first glimpse of the caldera — the massive volcanic crater filled with deep blue sea, surrounded by towering cliffs topped with white villages. This view alone is worth the trip. At Athinios Port, staff members in Seajets uniforms hold signs with your bus number and escort you to the correct vehicle.

10:30 — First Stop: Oia Village

The bus takes you north along the caldera rim to Oia (pronounced "ee-ah"), the most photographed village in all of Greece. You have approximately 1.5 hours of free time to explore at your own pace. Walk through the narrow marble-paved alleys lined with whitewashed houses, blue-domed churches, and boutique shops. Find the famous Three Blue Domes viewpoint — the single most photographed spot in the Greek islands. Visit small art galleries showcasing local painters. Enjoy a coffee or fresh orange juice at a cliffside cafe with a direct view of the caldera. Take photographs that will become the highlight of your holiday album.

Oia is built on the very edge of the volcanic cliff, 150 meters above the sea. Every corner reveals a new composition of white walls, blue sky, and deep blue water. The village was partially destroyed by an earthquake in 1956 and has been lovingly rebuilt into the iconic destination you see today.

12:30 — Second Stop: Fira (Capital of Santorini)

From Oia, the bus takes you south through the island's interior. Your guide provides commentary about Santorini's volcanic history, its famous wines, and the legendary Minoan eruption of 1600 BC that may have inspired the myth of Atlantis. You arrive in Fira, the vibrant capital of Santorini, perched 260 meters above the sea on the caldera cliff.

In Fira you have approximately 1.5 hours of free time. You can explore the winding pedestrian streets filled with jewellery shops, fashion boutiques, and souvenir stores. Choose a restaurant on the caldera rim and enjoy lunch with one of the most spectacular views on Earth — the volcanic islands of Nea Kameni and Palea Kameni rising from the deep blue water below you. If you prefer a quick meal, excellent gyros and souvlaki places are available for under €10.

Alternatively, you can take the cable car down to the Old Port (€6 per person, not included) and back up — a dramatic 220-meter descent and ascent with panoramic caldera views. History lovers can visit the Museum of Prehistoric Thera, which houses stunning frescoes from the ancient city of Akrotiri.

Optional: Volcano and Hot Springs Boat Trip

During the high season (late May through October), you can join an optional boat excursion to the Santorini volcano. A traditional wooden boat takes you across the caldera to Nea Kameni island, where you walk up to the active crater and see sulfur vents steaming from the earth. After the volcano, the boat stops at the natural hot springs — warm, mineral-rich waters where you can swim in the shadow of the caldera cliffs. This optional experience costs approximately €20 per person (payable on the spot - Seajets Boat Reception) and takes about 1.5 hours. Note that choosing this option reduces your free time in Fira.

15:30 — Departure from Santorini

The bus takes you back to Athinios Port for the return ferry. As the catamaran pulls away from Santorini, head to the open deck for a final view of the caldera bathed in afternoon light. The return crossing takes approximately 1 hour and 35 minutes.

17:05 — Arrival in Heraklion Port

Your bus is waiting at Heraklion Port to take you back to your hotel. Depending on your location, you arrive between 17:30 and 19:30. You return with a phone full of photographs, a head full of memories, and — if you visited the hot springs — the faint scent of volcanic sulfur on your skin.

The Experience: Speed, Comfort & Cycladic Perfection

Why settle for a long journey when you can fly across the waves? Your day starts at Heraklion Port, where you board the "Champions" of the Aegean. This Santorini Day Trip from Heraklion is meticulously planned to give you the most "Santorini" in a single day.

Forget the logistics; our air-conditioned coaches will be waiting at the port to whisk you straight to Oia. There, you’ll walk through the world’s most famous blue-domed alleys. Next stop, Fira, the cosmopolitan heart of the island. Whether you choose to enjoy a cliffside lunch or take the optional boat trip to the Volcano, you are traveling with the best in the business.

Frequently Asked Questions (Santorini Day Trip from Heraklion)

[+] How long is the ferry from Heraklion to Santorini?

The high-speed Seajets catamaran takes approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes to 2 hours (depending on the weather conditions) from Heraklion Port to Santorini's Athinios Port. This is the fastest crossing available from any port in Crete, which is why Heraklion is the best departure point for a Santorini day trip.

[+] How much does a Santorini day trip from Heraklion cost?

Our tour starts from €145 per adult, which includes hotel pickup and drop-off (not available for Heraklion city guests), round-trip Seajets ferry tickets, bus transfers on Santorini, and a professional guide. Children aged 3 to 10 receive a 50% discount. Infants aged 0 to 2 travel free of charge but sit on a parent's lap. An optional Platinum seat upgrade is available for €60 per person.

[+] Is one day enough to see Santorini from Crete?

Yes! The fast ferry from Heraklion gives you over 6 hours on the island, which is enough to visit both Oia and Fira, enjoy a leisurely lunch with caldera views, take hundreds of photos, and optionally visit the volcano. You will see all the famous landmarks — the blue domes, the caldera cliffs, the whitewashed alleys. If you want to experience the famous sunset, consider our 2-day overnight option instead.

[+] What time does the tour start and finish?

Hotel pickups start between 05:45 and 07:00, depending on your location. The ferry departs Heraklion at 08:00. The return ferry leaves Santorini at approximately 15:30, arriving in Heraklion at 17:05. You arrive back at your hotel between 17:30 and 19:30, depending on your location.

[+] Why do we arrive at the port at the scheduled time, even if the ferry is delayed?

After dropping you off in Santorini in the morning, the high-speed catamaran does not wait at the port. It continues its daily route to other Cycladic islands and returns in the afternoon to take you back to Crete.

Heavy maritime traffic or weather conditions at those other islands can sometimes delay its return to Santorini.

You might wonder why we still transfer you to Athinios Port at the original scheduled time, instead of giving you extra time in Fira. The answer is strict operational security.

When a delayed ferry finally docks, it often makes up for lost time by executing an extremely fast turnaround. Boarding happens immediately. If our buses wait for the ferry to arrive before heading down the steep caldera road to the port, you risk missing the departure entirely.

We know waiting at a busy port is not the ideal end to your day. However, our absolute priority is ensuring your safe return to Crete. We recommend bringing a book, keeping some water handy, and using this time to relax before boarding.

[+] Do I need a passport for the Crete to Santorini ferry?

Yes. Greek maritime law requires all passengers to carry a valid passport or national ID card for boarding. Digital copies on your phone are sometimes accepted, but we strongly recommend carrying the original document.

[+] Will I get seasick on the ferry?

The Seajets catamarans are large, modern vessels with stabilizers, so the ride is generally smooth. However, the Aegean Sea can be choppy during the Meltemi wind season (July and August). If you are prone to motion sickness, take a motion sickness tablet 30 minutes before departure, sit in the middle seats of the lower deck (the most stable area), and avoid heavy meals before boarding.

[+] Can I visit the Santorini volcano on a day trip?

Yes. During the high season (late May to October), an optional boat trip to the volcano and hot springs is available. You can book it at the boat reception on the ferry or directly in Santorini. It costs approximately €20 per person and lasts about 1.5 hours. Keep in mind that choosing this option reduces your free time in Fira.

[+] Is the tour suitable for children?

Yes. Families with children regularly join this tour. The Seajets vessels are comfortable, and some (like the Champion Jet 1) have a children's playroom. The walking in Santorini is moderate, and the bus handles the steep road up from the port. Children 3 to 10 pay half price, and infants under 3 travel free.

[+] Is lunch included?

No, meals are not included. This is intentional — it gives you full flexibility to choose your own experience. In Oia and Fira, you will find restaurants at every price level, from €8 gyros wraps to €50 fine dining with caldera views. The Seajets ferry also has a snack bar with sandwiches, coffee, and pastries.

[+] What if the weather is bad and the ferry is cancelled?

If Seajets cancels the ferry due to adverse weather conditions (which is rare but can happen, especially during strong Meltemi winds), you receive a full refund or can reschedule to another date. We contact you as early as possible — usually by the evening before — if there is a cancellation.

[+] Do I need to print my tickets?

No. After booking, you receive a voucher by email. Show it on your phone at the Seajets kiosk at Heraklion Port, and they will issue your boarding tickets. Everything is handled digitally — no printing needed.

[+] Why should I book with VisitCrete.com instead of a global platform?

We are locals. Our office is in Heraklion, five minutes from the port. We have been organizing this exact tour since 2004. If the wind changes, if a pickup point moves, if you need help at the last minute — we are right here. You are not calling a call center in another country. You are calling the people who live on this island and who will personally make sure your day goes perfectly. We also guarantee official Seajets pricing with no markup, and we offer 24/7 local support by chat, email, and phone.

[+] Can I book a Santorini day trip from Heraklion for the next day?

Yes, subject to availability. During peak season (July and August), ferry seats often sell out 3 to 4 days in advance, so we strongly recommend booking early. But if seats are available, we can confirm your booking even on the day before.
